Day 175

Father, 

We praise You for Your goodness to us. We don’t deserve it. Thank You for the good things we gain in surrendering to Your will, even if we can’t see them or recognize them as good yet. We know we ultimately will, because You can’t do anything less than what is best! 

Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. Like King Rey, we’ve forgotten our need for you, God. It’s so natural for us to lean into autonomy. We’ve built our own things to worship, and we repent. And also like King Rey, retaliation has crossed our minds at one point or another, and maybe we’ve even stepped up to the plate of revenge. We repent of that too, God. We look to You for the justice we can’t righteously work out.

Would You humble us, God? In the spaces where we are leaders, help us seek You first, not our own ways. In the spaces where we are followers, give us leaders who are after Your heart. We want to be about what You’re about. Help us. 

We surrender our lives to You, Lord—every moment of our day, each decision we make, we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way. 

We love You too. Amen.

Day 174

Father, 

We praise You for being a God who, despite Your perfection and our imperfection, still delights in us. You made us in Your image and You marked us with Your name! Thank You for delighting in us and bringing us to Yourself. We love being near You!

And because of that, we repent of our sins, God. We don’t want them to impact the intimacy we have with You. Like King Rey, we’ve rejected wise counsel. We’ve sought our own purposes and paths. Like King Jerry, we’ve been fearful of losing control and we’ve devised sinful plans to make us feel more secure. We repent of our idolatry, God. Your ways are higher than ours. 

We need You to make our hearts clean, to change them so that our desires match Yours. Continue to guide us, Holy Spirit. You know best where life is found, and we want to listen to what You have to say to us. We want to seek wise counsel and receive it! So please put wise mentors in our paths, God.

You are our Lord, and we surrender our lives to You—every moment of our day, each decision we make, we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way. 

We love You too. Amen.

Day 173

 

Father, 

We praise You for being the Hero of every story and the Source of all good things. Because You can be trusted, our hearts can be at peace. We can laugh without fear of the future, because our delight is in YOU!

Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. We’ve been arrogant and self-righteous, and our hearts have grown calloused. By the work of Your Spirit, soften our hearts. We repent of our hard hearts and ask You to keep softening them. 

Keep humbling us, and at the same time BEING our strength and dignity. When we try to manufacture our own it’s arrogant and flimsy. It’s not enough to stand on. But YOU are. May we keep decreasing while You keep increasing in our lives, so that others can see YOU. 

We surrender our lives to You, Lord—every moment of our day, each decision we make, we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way.

Day 172

Father, 

You set kings in place, and we praise You for being the King of all kings, the Lord of all lords. You are the universal authority, and everything You do is right and good. We praise You even for the things we can’t understand or that we disagree with, because we know that if we knew what You know, we’d see what You see. 

Like Solomon, we have looked to other gods besides You. We have sought out power and protection in places where it doesn’t exist, and perhaps even from evil sources. We repent of our idolatry. Have mercy on me, God. I’m a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You. Make our hearts clean of idols and fix our view of You. 

When we’re tempted to believe the lie that we don’t have enough, when we want to accumulate more for ourselves, would You remind us that You’ve provided all we need? May we enjoy what You’ve given us to the fullest, but never seek what we can’t gain righteously. Align our hearts and desires with Yours.  

We surrender our lives and our hearts and our desires to You, Lord. Every need, every decision, we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way. 

We love You too. Amen.

Day 171

Father, 

We praise You for being Peace itself and for comforting our hearts with who You are. It’s better than anything we could ever earn through our own striving. And thank You that we don’t have to recreate the preacher’s experiment to know where true joy and comfort can be found! We don’t have to wonder if riches are the way to happiness, because the richest man who ever lived already tested that out and found it lacking! 

But how easily we forget. We see an ad, we pass a house that’s nicer than ours, we hear about a friend’s vacation, another friend gets married or has a baby … and our hearts start to believe that we would be happy if only we had that. But we always want more. Our desires are broken, and we repent. Fix our hearts, God. Help us to want better things. We turn from our sins, acknowledge the truth, and turn to You instead.

Help us to fear You and keep Your commandments. Our days are numbered and our lives are a breath, and we don’t want to waste them on foolishness and vanity. Direct our steps toward wisdom and truth. 

We surrender our lives to You, Lord—every breath, every decision. We yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way. 

We love You too. Amen.

Day 170

Father, 

Whatever You do endures; nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it. And we praise You for that! You outlast everything! Thank You for being our firm foundation! 

We confess that we’ve tried to find other things to build our lives and hopes on. We’ve been motivated by competition, jealousy, and pride. Comparison has been our master, and repent. We turn from our sin and turn to You instead. Make our hearts clean. Rid us of our corrupt motives. 

Help us to be occupied with YOU instead of chasing the wind. We don’t want to pursue the fleeting pleasures and vanities of the world. We want to lay down the pursuit of earthly wealth and happiness in pursuit of You, Lord. You are the eternal joy!

We surrender our lives to You—every moment of our day, each decision we make, we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way. 

We love You too. Amen.

Day 169

We praise You for Your approval of us through the blood of Christ. Thank You that it is permanent and immovable. Yours is the only seal of approval we need, and it’s the only one that lasts! 

Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. We confess that we’re always seeking the approval of others, constantly finding our identity in what they think of us. We weigh their opinions more heavily than Yours. We compare ourselves to what we think they’re seeking, and we exhaust ourselves trying to measure up. And we repent. We acknowledge that this is wickedness and idolatry, and it brings our hearts no peace or comfort. Make our hearts clean.

Help us turn to YOU for our peace and comfort. We find full affirmation from You through Christ alone. And You have set your seal on us⁠—Your Holy Spirit. Remind us that we are Yours forever and that You are enough. And BY that truth, would You increase our boldness today? Make us as bold as a lion! Remind us that Your Spirit equips us for everything we’ll encounter. It is definitely more than we can handle—but it’s never more than YOU can handle. Thank You for that!

Day 168

Father, 

We praise You for knowing how to best bring glory to Your name, whether that’s in revealing something to us or keeping it a mystery. And thank You that You don't play hide and seek with anything we need to know to obey You! 

Have mercy on me, God. I’m a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. We confess we have been forceful or arrogant in trying to achieve our own way and we haven’t yielded to Your wisdom or even asked for it at times. We’ve gossipped about our neighbors. We’ve lived in gluttony instead of in self-control. We’ve been aggressive and quarrelsome instead of patient and humble. And we repent. 

Holy Spirit, would You develop Your characteristics in us? We want to demonstrate Your attributes: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Please be at work in us and prompt us when we revert to being driven by our flesh instead of by You.

Day 167

Father, 

We praise You for being after a relationship with us, being after our hearts, not our performance. Thank You for being in the business of redemption and restoration and for showing us forgiveness in all the ways we fall short. Your compassion toward us is on display even when You correct us!

Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. We have been rebellious against You and the rules You have laid out for our own good. 

Would You soften our hearts and teach us how to love You and obey You in everything⁠—from who we marry to who we work with to what we build with our lives. It all starts with how we view You, so open our eyes to see You clearly that we might love You more.

Day 166

 Father, 

We praise You for the ways You care for us each individually. You care for the oppressed, the hungry, the imprisoned, the blind, the sorrowful, the righteous, the displaced, the widowed, and the orphaned in such nuanced, specific ways that are exactly what they need. With all the people that You care for, You are so intentional with us. Even when we were among the wicked, You showed us mercy and pursued us and called us righteous instead. 

Because of Your great mercy, and by the work of Your Spirit in us, we repent of our sins and turn to You. Where we haven’t loved like you⁠, and we repent of it. We want to change, so we ask You to change our hearts.

Where we’ve turned a blind eye to the oppressed, the needy, the displaced, the imprisoned⁠—would You break our heart for what breaks Yours? Whether it’s the inherent God-given value of a human life, from womb to tomb, or the immediate tangible needs in our community, or those who are at a disadvantage because of systemic structures⁠—Jesus, You have walked through all of those struggles personally. You know how it feels to ache, and You know how it feels to bring healing. Grow our empathy and compassion so that we might be ministers of healing like You. That’s how we will truly be happy and blessed!
