Day 185

Father, 

You are so patient and kind with the wayward and rebellious, and we praise You for that. We also praise You that You can be trusted not to leave sin unpunished. Your heart for justice is a comfort to us, and so is Your heart for mercy! Your ways are always righteous, and we praise You for that too! 

Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. Idols have always and will always plague us. Like Jehu, we’re half-hearted. We follow some of Your ways and ignore others. Our idols cloud our vision and steal our affection for You. And we repent.

Would You clear away the idols in our lives? Increase our affection for YOU so that our interest in things that are opposed to You gets pushed out of our hearts? May You increase, as we and our idols decrease. 

We surrender our lives to You, Lord—every moment of our day, each decision we make, we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way. 

We love You too. Amen.

Day 184

Father, 

YOU SEEK OUT YOUR ENEMIES!! You track them down to bless them. And we praise You for that! It’s how we know You. Doubt is no obstacle for You. Lack of proximity doesn’t thwart Your plans. In fact, You generously position Your kids around Your enemies so You can extend mercy and demonstrate grace and point them back to YOURSELF! How abundantly kind of You! Your desires are perfect so we’re so glad You always get what You want!

Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. Like Naaman, we don’t always like Your ways. Like Gehazi, we’ve tried to manipulate and maneuver to get what we want. Our desires are not always good. Like the king’s servant, we’ve doubted Your power and Your goodness. Our hearts are bent, God, and we can’t fix them. We have exalted ourselves above You, and we repent.

Would You help us to see You rightly? Put gratitude in our hearts. Help us recognize Your kindness and Your goodness not only in our lives but in the lives of those around us. And work through us to draw others to You—those who are far from You. Make us like the servant girl. Position us around those enemies that You’re seeking out to adopt into Your family. Give us hearts of compassion, give us words to speak, give us boldness like Elisha.

We surrender our lives to You, Lord—every moment of our day, each decision we make, we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way.

Day 183

Father, 

We praise You for Your heart, even when we can’t see Your hand at work. So often, You provide in ways that are invisible to track, where we can’t see any progress, just results. You must love to surprise us! And even when things don’t turn out the way we hoped or asked You for, we know that what we consider earthly losses are still eternal victories in Your economy, so we praise You even for the kindness we won’t see or understand in this life. 

Sometimes when You’re at work behind the scenes, we doubt Your presence or Your ability or Your goodness. We question Your justice. How dare we. Like Ahaziah, we reject Your counsel and seek out others who will tell us what we want to hear. And for all of those things we repent. Have mercy on me, a sinner.

God, we have Your Spirit in us—fully and forever. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in us, and we praise You for that! Would You remind us that Your victory has been established, and is certain? We walk in the freedom of knowing You, being marked by Your name and filled with Your Spirit. Remind us of that when we forget! We will certainly be tempted to forget it today, God, so prompt us when we begin to walk by the flesh and not by Your Spirit.

Father, 

We praise You for the way You care for Your kids even when they’ve wandered off. You identify so closely with us that anytime we’re mistreated, You take it personally. Thank You for working justice on those who have opposed and oppressed Your people. 

Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. Like Edom, we have been passive—standing by idly while people acted unjustly. We’ve been arrogant and selfish, and we repent. 

Would You inspire us to action? Show us what it looks like to care for the oppressed, to not use someone’s weakness against them, but to pursue righteousness even when it comes to those we consider to be our enemies. Use us to do Your will and Your work in the world today.

Day 181

Father, 

We praise You for the fact that You hear us and save us in our affliction. Thank You that no matter what terrible things may happen to us, we’re in a relationship with a trustworthy God. You’ve already rescued us from the penalty of sin and from death, so there is no other rescue that’s too great for You. You can do it all.

Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. Like Jehoshaphat, we’ve made a lot of unrighteous concessions in order to keep the peace. We’ve built alliances with people who are Your enemies in order to gain approval or power, or even just to avoid conflict. We repent of ignoring wisdom and of looking to others to give us what we want. We turn our eyes and hopes from them and fix them on You instead.

God, like Jehoshphat, we don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on You. Direct our steps to follow Your plan, and align our hearts with the things that delight Yours. 

We surrender our lives to You, Lord—every moment of our day, each decision we make, we yield our will and our way to Your perfect will and way.

Day 180

Father, 

We praise You for the fact that nothing is “random” where You’re concerned. Somehow even our accidents align with Your plan. And we praise You for the fact that You are always ready to help us when we cry out to You, like Jehoshaphat did. You rescue the righteous in our time of need! 

And though You have called us righteous, we are still sinners. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. We’ve taken the world’s advice, and even taken it to heart. We’ve let it inform our actions before even talking to You about things. And when we’ve gotten counself from Your Word or promptings from Your Spirit, we’ve rejected them in favor of our own path. We idolize our own plans and desires over Yours, and we repent. 

Your ways are better, God. Would You remind us that all true wisdom comes from You? And give us that wisdom, please! Surround us with friends and counselors who love You enough to speak the hard truths, like Micaiah did. And grant us the strength to obey You and to trust that Your ways are not only best but they’re kind. Your plan is to help us FLOURISH.

Day 179

Father, 

We praise You for the fact that Your heart is so eager to forgive. The only time You don’t fulfill a promise is if You lean into mercy and grace instead—You exceed the goodness You’ve promised us, none of which we deserve! You are so patient with us and You seek out ways to bless us, even when we do evil in Your eyes, like King Ahab. 

We’ve been impatient and greedy just like him. We’ve wanted our way at the expense of others. We’ve taken the easy road by shortcutting obedience instead of fully walking it out. And like Jezebel, we’ve deceived others. We’ve manipulated and strived, and we’ve even murdered—even if only in by despising others in our hearts and minds. Have mercy on me. My sins are many. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. 

Help us walk in Your truth. We don’t want to manipulate those around us to serve our own purposes or tell white lies to keep up our reputation. We want to walk in the light, not in the darkness. Give us hearts that obey You and serve Your purposes, not our own.

Because we want that most of all, we surrender to You. May Your Lordship be evident in every moment of our day and each decision we make. We yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way. 

We love You too. Amen.

Day 178

Father, 

We praise You for Your closeness. We want Your nearness more than anything else. Thank You that don’t keep Yourself from us. Like Elijah, we have the privilege of Your presence and the comfort of Your voice—earthquakes and whirlwinds reveal how powerful You are, but the words on the pages of Your book reveal how personal You are.  

But it’s easy for us to forget. Like Elijah, we’ve been weary. At times, maybe we’ve even despaired of life itself. We’ve believed we were alone when we weren’t. You have always been there, in nearness and in kindness. We repent of letting our emotions speak louder than the truth. We repent of listening to ourselves more than we talk to ourselves.And listening to ourselves more than we listen to Your Word.  We repent of believing our feelings instead of Your Word. Have mercy on me. Make our hearts clean, God. 

It’s hard being human …. we don’t know all You know or see all You see, and we’re bound up in our flesh for the time being, so would You continue to grow our relationship with You so that we know and trust You more? Grow our knowledge of You and deepen our intimacy with You.

Day 177

Father, 

We praise You for Your sovereignty over all hearts—our enemies, our allies, and ourselves. You are a good God whose sovereignty sets our hearts at ease. If You were evil or foolish, it would be tragic and terrifying for You to be in control. But because You are good and wise, Your sovereignty is our greatest comfort. Thank You that Your plans for our good and Your glory have been established and will be accomplished.

Like Baasha and his family, we’ve chased after worthless things—idols and vanities. We’ve spun our wheels worshipping something that won’t last. And we repent. Have mercy on me, a sinner. We turn from our idolatry and turn to You, the One true God, the only One who can make our hearts clean. 

Would You help us to be more like Jehoshaphat, who was courageous in following You? Help us to seek and honor You. So much of Your work happens at a heart level, so shape our hearts to look like Yours, God.

We surrender our lives and our hearts to You—our thoughts, words, actions, and inactions. We yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way.

Father, 

THANK YOU for being the God who chases us until we find You. We’re so glad You are discoverable and that we still get to discover new things about You every day!

But we confess that we love our autonomy. Like Asa, we often treat You like our last resort, if we come to You at all. Sometimes we resist rebukes and consequences or take our anger with You out on others. And we repent. Have mercy on me, a sinner. 

Whatever the high places are in our own hearts, God, we ask You to remove them. Give us the discernment to recognize them and the strength to destroy them. Direct our steps to seek You first and to depend on You. If dependence on You is our goal, then our weakness is our greatest advantage. We need You, God. 

We surrender our lives to You, Lord—every need, each decision—we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way. 

We love You too. Amen.
