Jehovah Tsidkenu,
You are the LORD our Righteousness. Jesus, You reign as King and deal wisely, You execute justice and righteousness in the land. Thank You for becoming our righteousness! We could never have it apart from You. We’re sinners, adopted and declared righteous in the presence of the Father because of Your work on our behalf. THANK YOU!
Father, You have already shown us such great mercy by sending Jesus to die on our behalf. We need Your continual mercy, because our sins are many. Our sins deserve punishment, but it has been paid. Because our sins were so costly, help us to take them seriously. As You bring them to mind, help us to repent in that very moment, and ask You then to purify our hearts. Make them look like Yours.
We surrender our lives to You, our God, King, Savior, and Master—every moment of our day, each decision we make, we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way.
We love You too. Amen.

Day 224

Tuesday Aug 11, 2020
Father,
We praise You for Your great love. It changes us. It comforts us when we lose our relationships or when we despair of our lives, like Jeremiah. It empowers us to speak truth to those in power—like Jeremiah did to King Zedekiah—because we know You are more powerful still. Your love is the bedrock of our lives.
Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. We have been the clay, accusing the Potter. We’ve been like the people of Judah, following our own plans according to the stubbornness of our own hearts. And we repent.
Would You grant us hearts to obey You? Our deepest intimacy with You and our greatest joy is found in being close to You. And that intimacy comes through obedience. Your Word says YOU are the one who works in us both to want and to do what You desire. So please, pour out Your grace on us—Your grace is an agent of change—and let it create the “want” in us and create the “do” in us.
We surrender our lives to You, Lord—every want, every do—we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way.
We love You too. Amen.

Day 223

Monday Aug 10, 2020
Father,
We praise You for wanting time with us. That is mind-blowing in the best way possible! We need intimacy with You. You are the closest companion we could ever have, and You are the epitome of a perfect Father and Master and Friend to us. Like Jeremiah, we aren’t promised that we’ll be spared from trials, but You’ve promised that You will ALWAYS be with us and that is far better than an easy life.
Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. We push back on Your ways sometimes, God. Sometimes it feels like Your calling and Your assignment are too heavy for us. Our hearts are weary, our shoulders curve inward, and our eyes can’t find rest. Sometimes it feels like the only news we get is bad news. Jeremiah knows how we feel, and Jesus knows how we feel. Jesus demonstrated for us how to walk out a tough calling humbly and obediently and with hope and joy. Where we fall short of that, God, we repent. Where we fall short of that, change our hearts. And where we fall short of that, we are so grateful that Jesus did not fall short. He fulfilled all that is required of us and His righteousness is accredited to our account.
Spirit, by Your power, give us stamina. Give us hope. Give us strength. We have none of it without You. But You know the exact weight of the burdens we carry, and You know they are too much for us on our own. So by Your power, would You shoulder the load? Would You surround us with people to fight alongside us? But even if we fight alone, thank You for being our Divine Companion who loves and upholds us with every breath and fights for us.
We love You too. Amen.

Day 222
Sunday Aug 09, 2020
Sunday Aug 09, 2020
Father,
Thank You for being with us in every moment—not just in destinations and arrivals, but in steps. You are attentive, speaking, giving direction… all because You CARE about us! You know there’s more for us than wandering off into sin and carrying our idols around with us. Thank You for guiding us.
Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. Like the Israelites, we’ve been lugging our idols around, hoping they will grant us what we want in life. Sometimes our idols are even dressed up in little Christian outfits—we think if we phrase our prayers in just the right way or start volunteering at church or stop doing something you disapprove of, that it will be the secret code for unlocking Your blessings in our lives. As though You’re a combination lock and not a Person. We repent of treating prayers like mantras and treating You as though You’re our servant, instead of the other way around.
Would You ruin our pride like a loincloth? Grant us the strength and trust in You that enables us to endure any trials we may suffer as a result of following You. We know You can be trusted to handle it and to work on our behalf, for Your glory and our good. So like Jeremiah, help us to entrust that to You and to occupy ourselves with doing Your will instead of seeking to justify ourselves or our actions. God, You told Jeremiah, “Listen to my voice and do all that I command you,” and he replied, “So be it, Lord.” And so do we. So be it, Lord.
We love You too. Amen.

Day 221

Saturday Aug 08, 2020
Father,
You are the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. You lead with love. You overflow with love. You work justice and righteousness, and You delight in the truth being made manifest in those areas. We praise You for the fact that Your standards are PRECISE when it comes to these things. You never cook the books.
Meanwhile, we’re mostly concerned with justice only for ourselves. We want others to act righteously but it’s okay if we stretch the truth or bend the limits. We want to be admired and empowered more than we want to be loved, because love leaves us vulnerable. We acknowledge and confess our sins to you, God, and we repent.
Align our hearts with Yours. Prompt us toward humility. Show us what it means to be angry at our own sin and heartbroken over others’ so that we don’t slip into prideful thinking and arrogant speech. Equip us to lead with love the way that You do. Help us to demonstrate YOU to the world around us—steadfast love, justice, and righteousness.
We surrender our lives to You, Lord—every moment of our day, each decision we make, we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way.
We love You too. Amen.

Day 220
Friday Aug 07, 2020
Friday Aug 07, 2020
Father,
Your heart is so patient in guiding us. You are so generous to give us Your Word. And You’ve given us Your Spirit to remind us of what Your Word says, to direct our steps, to conform us to Your image. THANK YOU that we aren’t left to wander aimlessly without direction.
Whether rich or poor, educated or uneducated, we’re all sinners, alienated from You by birth. And even after being adopted into Your family, we’ve still wandered off into idolatry. Just like the people of Jerusalem, our sin has kept us from receiving good and from doing good. It has robbed us. We have robbed ourselves, and we repent.
Wash the evil from our hearts, God. We need You today, just like yesterday. We repented today, and we’ll need to do it again tomorrow. So we’re grateful for Your persistence. You are committed to conforming us to Your Son’s image, and we’re so grateful that You never give up on us.
We love You too. Amen.

Day 219
Thursday Aug 06, 2020
Thursday Aug 06, 2020
Father,
You are the God who started it all. You knew us and set us apart before You created us. And You are the God who stays. Even after all our sin and rebellion, You just won’t leave. We praise Your for Your faithfulness to us, for keeping Your promise to David and to Your people, despite a history of failure and idolatry.
God, we are just like the Israelites. We’ve been guilty of forgetting all You’ve done for us. We’ve been camels in the desert—aimless without guidance. We’ve been wild donkeys who follow every lust and desire. And we’ve brushed off the thought of judgment. Instead of turning to You when we’re in need, we exhaust ourselves trying to dig our own cisterns, but they crack and break. We’re exhausted, God, and we are sinners and we repent.
We need the refreshment that comes from You and Your Word and Your nearness. Jesus, You are the living water! You are the well that never runs dry! You have given us all of Yourself already, so help US to give YOU more of OURSELVES.
We love You too. Amen.

Day 218
Wednesday Aug 05, 2020
Wednesday Aug 05, 2020
Father,
You are a restorer! You give us what we could never earn and You do what we could never accomplish! And we praise You for it! We’re so encouraged by these words: The King of Israel, the LORD is in your midst; you shall never again fear evil. When Zephaniah wrote those words, You were living among Your people, promising to restore them after the exile, and they found hope in those words. But we are living in an even greater reality than they could ever imagine, because NOW, Your Spirit isn’t just living in our midst, but living in us! We never have to fear evil, because You have defeated it eternally!
Have mercy on me, a sinner. We don’t want to be like the people of Jerusalem—proud, stubborn, faithless, and autonomous—and yet we are, more often than we’d like to admit. How many times today will we compare ourselves to someone else or wonder what they think of us? That’s our pride, and we repent. How many times will we resist being teachable? That’s our stubbornness, and we repent. We’ll lean into worry and control, putting our faithlessness and autonomy on full display before You. We repent of these things, knowing we’ve earned exile and punishment. But You’ve granted us forgiveness already through the death of Your Son, so please grant us clean hearts, too.
Grow us in humility, teachability, faith, and surrender! That’s what it looks like to call you Lord and Master. So we do. We surrender our lives to You. You are our Lord—Lord of every moment, Lord of each decision, Lord of the path and the plan. So we humbly yield.
We love You too. Amen.

Day 217
Tuesday Aug 04, 2020
Tuesday Aug 04, 2020
Father,
Thank You that You want to speak to us and that You have unlimited resources for doing that! You are the God who can work even through Your enemies for the good of Your kids! Your enemies become Your unwitting servants—that’s how big You are!
Have mercy on me, a sinner. Like the people of Judah, there have been times when we haven’t valued Your Word properly or maybe even forgotten it exists. The truth has been covered in cobwebs and used to prop up idols so we can keep them at eye level. And we repent.
Despite all that, here we are—talking to You, reading Your Word. So it’s clear You’re up to something in our lives, despite our sins. You mercifully reveal Your truth to us all over again. Would You guide us to clear out the spaces the idols have filled, to tear them down, to turn them into the graveyards and outhouses in our lives. Help us get rid of those things and, instead, give us more of whatever draws us to You!
We surrender our lives to You, Lord—every moment of our day, each decision we make, we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way.
We love You too. Amen.

Day 216
Monday Aug 03, 2020
Monday Aug 03, 2020
Father,
You undo the undoing done by our enemies. In Your righteousness, You set things right. And we praise You for it. Thank You for being trustworthy—You fulfilled Your word through Nahum, and You are still fulfilling Your promises to Your people. You haven’t forgotten. Day by day, we’re getting closer to the return of Your Son. Come, Lord Jesus! We long for the day!
Have mercy on me, a sinner. If we’re honest, sometimes we’re not the victims of oppression, but we are the oppressor. Sometimes we’re the ones doing the unrighteousness. And sometimes it’s become such a part of our normal behavior that we don’t even notice it and we get defensive if someone points it out in us. It’s hard for us to admit the we have character flaws. But we can confess anything to YOU, God, because You know it all, You see it all, and You won’t reject us for it.
We don’t want to be like Nineveh, who followed you for a century and then turned against You. So would You search our hearts, see if there is any offensive way in us, and lead us in the way of truth and righteousness? Illuminate the dark corners of our hearts.
We surrender our lives to You, Lord—may every dark corner be exposed, may every sin be devoured by fire as we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way.
We love You too. Amen.
