Father,
We praise You for making us radiant. You are the one who takes away our shame and makes our faces and our dispositions brighter in this ever-darkening world. You are what sets us apart to shine Your light into those dark spaces. Your light is always stronger than the dark, and we praise You for it! We praise You for all the beautiful things David talked about today—Your nearness, Your justice, Your protection. You are infinitely good to us.
Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. Like David, we know there are sins we’re completely unaware of. Ways we’ve dishonored You and doubted Your character. Some of those thoughts and actions have become so automatic and natural for us that we don’t even evaluate them anymore. We repent not only of our sins, but also of our callousness.
Where we’ve grown comfortable in our sin, where it has become our routine way of existing, would you prompt us to better ways, brighter ways, ways that point us back to you? When our complaining becomes commonplace, when our gossiping is just the normal way we communicate with friends, when we let our fears rum rampant and unchecked in our minds, would You speak a louder truth to us? Fix the ways we talk to ourselves and the ways we talk to others. Keep our tongues from evil and our lips from speaking deceit. Fix our hearts, God. We can’t do it. You own our hearts and You live in our hearts, and we are desperate for Your renewing work. May we look to You and be made radiant. Remind us of who You are!
We surrender our lives to You, Lord—every moment of our day, each decision we make, we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way.

Father,
We praise You for the way You beautifully choreograph timing. You guide us and direct our steps to align with Your plan, and You lead us so perfectly!
We follow through imperfectly though. So have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. Our sins have hurt others besides just You and us. The impact of our sins can’t be measured, and the cost of our sin can’t be counted by any standard apart from the death of Your Son. So we repent of our sins, God. We turn from the things we do that break Your heart—the sins that Jesus paid for and died to free us from.
Spirit, would You direct our steps with clarity? Our hearts are set to honor You, so please be clear about Your will in our lives. When we’re uncertain and attempting to make our best guesses, please grant us wisdom and discernment. Spirit, one of Your names is Guide—Jesus said You will guide us into all truth. So we ask You for that guidance today.
We surrender our lives to You, Lord—every moment of our day, each decision we make, we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way.

Father,
We praise You for the fact that You are never worried. Not a single thing leaves You anxious. You know the fate of Your enemies and You laugh at them because their plans for evil will ultimately fail. We praise You for being victorious and for being protective of Your kids in the battle. You alone are our confidence, God.
But we’ve been tempted to put our confidence in other things, God—things that can be shaken and taken. We repent of replacing You as our source of identity and joy. We repent of seeking the praise of others as our ultimate goal, like Saul did. We repent of the jealousy and fear we feel when their approval is threatened or taken away. Our selfish motives lead us away from You to even greater types of sin and evil. Have mercy on me, a sinner.
Would You protect us from committing evil? Cut it off at the root, God—at the first feeling of sin and selfishness—before it grows into fear and manipulation and murder. It all starts with that seed of desire to be self-preserving and self-sovereign. So grant us faith to trust in You, the only One who has control over those things. By the power of Your Spirit, prompt us to uproot the sinful feeling before it becomes the sinful thought that becomes the sinful action.

Father,
We praise You for the fact that You have emotions. You aren’t just some brain in the sky, some distant, unloving lawmaker who is removed from us and our struggles. You ARE joy and You’re after OUR joy! We praise You for the way You raise up the humble to be used for Your purposes. When You use us in Your plan, You get the glory and we get the joy!
Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. We repent of setting up monuments to ourselves, declaring our own worth and value. You alone are worthy, God. We repent of justifying our sins and trying to downplay them, like Saul did.
Would You give us the zeal for Your glory that David had? Would You saturate us with faith in who You are that is rooted in the knowledge of who You are that is rooted in the truth we see about You on the pages of Your Word? Please keep revealing Yourself to us, God. We’re lost without You!

Father,
We praise You for Your sovereignty over timing! We praise You for the way sin bends to serve Your ultimate will. It never has the last word, God, and that is so comforting! The sins we commit against You and others and the sins committed against You and us—none of them have the final say. In Your goodness, You’ve made a plan to pay for our sins. Jesus, in Your goodness, You’ve fulfilled that plan. Thank You for that!
We’ve doubted You and Your timing though, God. We’ve rushed ahead when it felt You were too slow. Like Saul, we’ve been marked by fear, and we repent. We’ve been driven by our impulses, and we repent. Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean.
Would You give us hearts like Jonathan—hearts of courage and zeal that trust You and obey You even in the face of danger and loss? Would You grant us integrity to be honest even when it costs us something? Would You help us trust Your plan and Your timing? Our times are in Your hand, Lord.

Father,
We praise You for the fact that You delight to turn sinners into family. You pursue the ones who have rejected You, lavish them with love and forgiveness, and You woo their hearts to repent. Thank You for calling us Your kids. We are so grateful! We praise You for the way Your sovereign plan fits together so perfectly, piece by piece, move by move, to accomplish Your glory and our ultimate joy!
We’ve been fearful of Your plan, God. We’ve mistrusted Your heart, and we repent. Where we’ve believed our plan is better than Yours, we repent. Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You. Make our hearts clean.
Where we’ve looked too much at ourselves and our insufficiencies, point our eyes to You. Where we’ve preferred our own desires over Yours, set our hearts straight. Remind us that You’re with us to accomplish all You’ve called us to do; we aren’t alone—Your Spirit guides us. Remind us that Your plan is right and kind, even when we can’t see it.

Father,
We raise our Ebenezer today. Thus far, You have helped us. In ways we’ve seen and celebrated, and in ways we’ve missed and ignored. You have always been our Helper. We praise You for Your sufficiency. You are the one true God. Your plan is perfect and Your ways are right and true.
We repent of rejecting what You’ve called us to. We repent of not viewing You as sufficient. We repent of being driven by fear of man more than love of You. Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean, God.
Help us to embrace You and Your ways, God. Our flesh wants to reject You, but we know that Your Spirit lives within us and is producing Your fruit in us. May we demonstrate that fruit today and marvel at all You’ve done for us and in us!

Father,
We praise You for being a safe place to take our pain and our longings. You are with us in our pain and You can be trusted to do what is best with our desires and our aches. Thank You that we’re invited to draw near to You without fear of condemnation, because Christ made a way for us to be in relationship with You. Jesus, we praise You for Your perfect sacrifice, for fulfilling all that is required of us. You walked the painful path of obedience and we reaped the benefits. Thank You.
Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. Like Eli, we have judged others too harshly when they’re in pain. We have misunderstood their motives and their actions. We’ve measured them against our own responses and circumstances, without demonstrating the love and gentleness You’ve shown us. We repent of hoarding Your compassion toward us as though there’s not enough for anyone else. Like Eli’s sons, we’ve had contempt for You and others, and we repent.
Humble us, God. Soften our responses to others and to You. Open our hearts to hear from You. Would You speak to us through Your Word as we fix our eyes on it daily? And would You prompt us through Your Spirit who lives in us? Without Your work in us, we grow calloused and arrogant. We need You today and every day.

Father,
We praise You for being a God who redeems and restores! You see the widows. You see the childless. You see the faithful men who have served You with honor throughout their lives. You meet us in the place of our need and write us into a much bigger story than our own. Our fulfillment and joy is just one brush stroke of the bigger joy picture!
Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. We repent of leaning into despair, of identifying too closely with our own bitterness and loss. Our stories are not over, and You are still on the throne.
Remind us that sadness is okay and grief is important. Teach us to mourn our losses and disappointments in a way that honors You. Draw near to us in our aches and our vacancies. Bring restoration and redemption, God. Some of us are still in the famine. Some of us are working in the fields. Some of us have identified too much with our own bitterness. Would You lean in today and give us a glimpse of Your great love for us? Remind us that You see us. Christ’s death on the cross proved that once and for all, but You know when our hearts need to be reminded and You draw near to the crushed in Spirit.

Father,
We praise You for being the ONLY source of deep, lasting, sustaining joy! You’re it! Our hearts know the truth!
But our hearts are forgetful, God. We recoil at these stories of wickedness we read today, but we forget that we’ve committed similar sins against You. We’ve been selfish and arrogant and disregarded the needs of others. In our own way, we’ve fought for what we wanted regardless of what it cost others. We repent of that. And we repent of the arrogance that prompts us to compare our sins to other people’s sins—as though we don’t need the same blood of Jesus to cover us too. Without the death of Your Son Jesus, our sins would separate us from intimacy with You forever! We are just as guilty as the Levite, just as guilty as the Benjamin leaders — of different sins, but of the same rebellious hearts.
Teach us what faithfulness to You looks like. Today, when our hearts wander off into tiny rebellions that we’re tempted to justify— when we feel superior to the coworker who annoys us, when we feel smarter than the person who can’t drive with our same level of skill or awareness, when we feel smug over the fact that we didn’t make the poor choice that our spouse did—would You remind us that those tiny rebellions are rooted in our pride and arrogance? Would You draw us in by the truth that we are completely unloveable and unworthy but WILDLY loved and accepted nonetheless because of Jesus? We can lay our pride to rest! It only drives a wedge in our intimacy with You and cripples our ability to love others well.
Help us never to do what is right in our OWN eyes. Help us never to try to live OUR truth. Instead, help us surrender our lives to You, Lord—every moment of our day, each decision we make. Help us yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way.
We love You too. Amen.
