Tuesday Sep 01, 2020
Tuesday Sep 01, 2020
Father,
We praise You for hating sin. We praise You for loving Your glory and Your kids. Your ways are righteous, God.
Ours are not. We are unrighteous. Like Israel, it would be fair to compare us to dross. Even Your enemies are shocked by our behavior sometimes, because we’ve left no commandment unbroken. We know it. You know it. But that’s what makes Your love all the more shocking and glorious. You see our sin fully, and You speak a better truth over us nonetheless. You call us precious, beloved, the sought out ones. Your massive love for us despite our sins softens us, it prompts us to respond with repentance and love. So we do, God. Bring to mind the areas of our thoughts and actions that have dishonored You. Grant us repentance in those areas—the true repentance that turns the other direction and walks away from our sin and toward You.
Thank You for granting us the righteousness of Your Son Jesus. Thank You for the intimacy that comes from having Your Spirit in us. We surrender our lives to You, Lord—every moment of our day, each decision we make, we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way.
We love You too. Amen.

Father,
We praise You for the way You’ve given us the law to help us see Your holiness and perfection plus our brokenness, and to teach us how to live in ways that honor others and that glorify You. We need the law, but it’s not enough for us, because we can’t keep it. So we praise You especially for the gospel that comes to us through the death and resurrection of Your Son Jesus. When we acknowledge the weight of the law, we know the Gospel is our only hope. That’s what makes the Gospel “good news”.
So here we are—sinners by the law, saints by the Gospel of Jesus. And we come to You in all Your glory and call You Father because You adopted us into Your family. Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. We have a history of rejecting You. It happens on a daily basis in ways so subtle we may not even notice—when we have a selfish or arrogant thought, when we fear the future, when we angle for position…
...When that happens, help us to know and remember and live and believe that You are the LORD. When we want to turn from You to our idols, when we want to run from You in our sin and shame, remind us that You have dealt with us for Your name’s sake, not according to our evil ways, nor according to our corrupt deeds. THANK YOU for that.
We love You too. Amen.

Day 243
Sunday Aug 30, 2020
Sunday Aug 30, 2020
Father,
We praise You for the way You have broadened and widened and deepened Your relationship with Your people! When they broke the covenant, You expanded it. You covered the cost of their sins Yourself! Thank You for the way we get to enjoy the benefits of that! We have the blessing of Your eternal covenant, we have Your promise of a new heart, we have Your Spirit living in us! Thank You that You didn’t walk away when that’s all any of us have ever deserved.
Like Sodom, we’ve been proud and arrogant, and it has manifested in many ways—from greed and selfishness to sexual sin and ignoring the poor. Like the orphan who is pursued by the king, we’ve chased after other lovers. Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean.
As You’ve promised the Israelites, would You restore our fortunes, God? Restore the things we’ve lost by pursuing things besides You. Restore our faith, restore our joy, restore our peace and our hope—those are our TRUE fortunes. Those are the things our hearts long for the most.
You are our true delight. We yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way.
We love You too. Amen.

Day 242
Saturday Aug 29, 2020
Saturday Aug 29, 2020
Father,
We praise You for caring about the peace we carry with us day by day, for wanting us to walk in truth. In fact, You care about that so much that You’ve given us Your Son, who is the Prince of Peace and the Truth Himself. And You’ve given us Your Spirit, who guides us into all truth, who brings us the peace that defies circumstance and comprehension. You have always wanted peace and truth for us and we praise You for making it possible, because it wouldn’t be possible apart from You.
Like the rebellious elders, we’ve been guilty of taking idols into our hearts. Like the false prophets, we’ve tried to speak things into existence by attaching Your name to them. We’ve been estranged from You through our desire for other things that we want more than You. We may still acknowledge You but sometimes we shelve You and make other things the centerpiece. And we repent. Have mercy on me, a sinner.
You’ve granted us freedom but we don’t walk in it yet, God. Train our hearts to respond to Your love. Shame and self-discipline haven’t done us any favors. They don’t love us. We’ve known better and we haven’t cared. We’ve tried hard and we keep failing. We want to reflect Christ, so help us, Spirit. And even still, for all the ways we don’t and never will on this side of eternity, we thank You Jesus, that You DID live the perfect life.
All glory to You, Jesus. For all failings, You are enough. For all our desires, You are enough. For all our needs, You are enough.
We love You too. Amen.

Day 241
Friday Aug 28, 2020
Friday Aug 28, 2020
Father,
We praise You for the way You pursued Your people even as they went into exile. Your glory left Your temple and all its beauty and went to be near the captives in Babylon. And Jesus, You demonstrated this to us too, and we praise You for it! You left Your dwelling place in heaven to descend to the lower regions of earth. Spirit, You descend into the depths of man, to dwell in God’s adopted kids, sinners who have been declared saints, but who still live in these bodies broken by sin. Father, Son, and Spirit, You are the triune God who goes to great lengths to be with Your people, and we are eternally grateful.
Have mercy on me, a sinner. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean. Like the exiles, our default mindset is our cultural mindset, not our spiritual mindset. We repent of letting worldly values like greed and self-preservation take precedence in our hearts over the things You value.
Would You draw nearer to us today and speak Your truth to us by reminding us of what we’ve read in Your Word? Help us to meditate on Your character and draw us to live it out to the world around us. Spirit, we need You to give us little notifications throughout the day—like the buzzes and pings and red dots on our phones—catch our attention. Remind us that You’re with us, that we’re not alone, and that You are doing us good, not harm, all the days of our lives.
We trust You and we surrender. Give us ears to listen. We yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way.
We love You too. Amen.

Day 240
Thursday Aug 27, 2020
Thursday Aug 27, 2020
Father,
You want to be known. Like the remnant, we’ve done nothing to earn Your love and be adopted into Your family. You’ve freely given it to us. Because of our iniquity, we cannot maintain our life. But Jesus maintained it for us FOR FREE. Praise Christ.
Have mercy on me, God. I’m a sinner. Our idolatry has broken Your heart. And You have paid for what we’ve broken. We’ve rejected Your patient love, and You’ve extended more patience. Your love is unmatched, and we seek other loves because we don’t take the time to understand You. For all these things, we repent.
Help us to know You and make You known, God. Use us to magnify Your name, display Your mercy, and continue working out Your plan to restore humanity in relationship with Yourself. We want to be a part of that! And any time You want to teleport us to Jerusalem, we’re good with that too. Just putting that out there.
We surrender our lives to You, Lord—every moment of our day, each decision we make, our lives our Yours. We yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way.
We love You too. Amen.

Day 239
Wednesday Aug 26, 2020
Wednesday Aug 26, 2020
Father,
We praise You for being intentional and kind in the way You’ve made us. Whether we’re insensitive like Ezekiel or tenderhearted, You have a plan that involves us, and You’ve created our personalities and strengths and weaknesses accordingly. Thank You for using us—it’s our greatest joy to know You and be a part of advancing your Kingdom.
Have mercy on me, a sinner. Like the Israelites exiles in Babylon, sometimes we know the truth but aren’t impacted by it. We hear Your Word but aren’t moved to repentance. Sometimes, no matter what our personality type, we act in ways that are foolish and stubborn. We repent of our sins and turn to You and we ask You to make our hearts clean.
When our ears are closed to Your message, would You patiently and lovingly pursue us? You followed the rebellious Israelites into enemy territory to remind them who You are to them, and because Your Spirit lives in us, we can’t go ANYWHERE that You aren’t pursuing us. Thank You for that. Keep it up. :) We want You to have Your way in our lives, God.
We love You too. Amen.

Day 238
Tuesday Aug 25, 2020
Tuesday Aug 25, 2020
Father,
You, O LORD, reign forever; Your throne endures to all generations. You aren’t an outdated idea. You couldn’t possibly be, because You’re outside of time! And not only do You reign forever, but You are GOOD forever. Your ways are righteous. Like a loving Father, You bring discipline, but You don’t willingly afflict Your kids. It’s good for us to learn these things about You when we’re young. It’s good to have You drive entitlement from our hearts and grow us in patience before we hit life’s trials.
Some of us are well into our lives and we still struggle to learn that, God. We never learn how to tell ourselves no for anything we want. We demand things on our timeline. And the minute we have to wait a minute, we lash out. We repent of our impatience. We repent of our entitlement. And most of all, we repent of blaming YOU when things don’t go our way, like the people of Judah, instead of seeing it as Your kindness and mercy. Woe to us, for we have sinned.
Where our hearts and minds have wandered, would You restore us to Yourself, O Lord? You are a better treasure. You are a better goal. Your plan—even though it can be challenging to us—is better than ours. We confess it. Help us believe it.
We surrender our lives to You, Lord—every moment of our day, each decision we make, we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way.
We love You too. Amen.

Monday Aug 24, 2020
Monday Aug 24, 2020
Father,
We praise You for the fact that we can pour out our hearts like water before You. You can handle all our emotions. You aren’t going to have a knee-jerk reaction to us and angrily lash out at us. You are patient and methodical, even as we falsely accuse You and misunderstand You.
And we have, God. Like the people of Judah, we’ve blamed You for our trials. Like Judah, we can say, “The Lord is in the right, for I have rebelled against His Word.” Our anger has been directed toward You instead of our own sin. Our longing has been for what we’ve lost or never had instead of for greater nearness and intimacy with You. And we repent. Please reshape and refocus our hearts, God.
We need to remember the right things. We need to remember Your goodness. Your mercy. Your compassion. We need to remember that we’re not alone. By Your Spirit, would You remind us of those things today? You haven’t forgotten us. We belong to You today and forever.
We surrender our lives to You, Lord—every moment of our day, each decision we make, we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way.
We love You too. Amen.

Sunday Aug 23, 2020
Father,
We praise You for giving us the gift of Yourself! There is no better inheritance than YOU! Thank You that You want to spend time with Your kids. Thank You that You have rescued us not only despite our sin but from the eternal penalties of our sins.
Have mercy on me, a sinner. We turn FROM our sins and TO You and ask You to make our hearts clean. We’ve clung to worthless idols, God. And sometimes even when our hearts are set on worshipping You alone, we grow so fearful about all the people around us who AREN’T worshipping You. We fear what it will cost us and what we’ll lose because of their sins. We panic and strive when we forget that we can’t lose anything eternal. We repent of our short-sightedness, God. We repent of trying to cling to earthly comforts instead of eternal joys.
In the midst of a world of chaos, we cling to the God who uttered these words to the Israelites in Babylon: Let not your heart faint, and be not fearful at the report heard in the land. Would You help us not to fear the present or the future, but to be driven instead by our awe and delight of YOU, God? No matter what’s happening in the world around us, point our hearts to seek You and Your glory above all else—in thought, in word, and in action. Today and tomorrow and forever.
We surrender our lives to You, Lord—every moment, every decision we make, we yield our will and way to Your perfect will and way.
We love You too. Amen.
